Evaluation of Art Work

Grass hopper study
This is a study I have done for the creatures project in Art. I used a 5H pencil to lightly sketch out it's form based off of a print out. I then used a B pencil to add harder lines and add further definition. Once the form was complete, I used a 2B and 4B pencil to shade.

Beetle
This is another insect study for my creatures project.
In this study I drew out a beetle crawling across a leaf.
As before, I used a 5H pencil to draw out it's form lightly, I then moved on to the B pencil to solidify the final lines, I also used the length of the pencil to measure out the patterns on the beetles shell.

Drowsy Lizard
I decided to draw from this print out as it seemed to be a difficult piece to do and I wanted to push myself a bit.
I drew out the form of this lizard initially using circles and squares. I drew this out lightly and then used a darker pencil to build up the form further. I then added guide lines to aid me in figuring out the locations of the lizards facial features.

After this, I begun building up the scales lightly from the edges, as well as points of focus. Eyes, cheeks, etc... I used an even darker pencil to darken the lines of certain scales in order to emphasize the shaded areas.

Prideful Lizard
Once again, I wanted to push myself with my next study, also I really enjoyed my previous study, which is why I decided to draw another lizard. This time however the scales seemed to be more randomly placed and more independent of one another. This made building up the image more difficult as there wasn't as much of a pattern to follow.

I basically built up the initial form in the same way as before; using shapes. I only really had to change things up when it came to the scales, as there was less of a pattern to involved. I had to pay more attention to my reference material to replicate the random nature of the scales.

Eagle
My depiction of an eagle head, close up.I drew this out in pencil and layered the feathers with different shades of pencils. I did this to create the intended layered effect.

Animation Research

I particularly enjoyed this animation as it was rigged and animated using the same software we are currently learning in class, Lightwave. I also like how the video uploader provided a breakdown of the processes behind the animation.

This is an old teaser trailer for A Bugs Life, this is a film about insects and the journey of an ant named Flik. This is one of my favourite animated movies from my childhood. It was created by the movie studio Pixar, who also created Toy Story.

This is a stop-motion based animation using what seems to be play-dough. The snake is moved around bit by bit while the creator of the video takes pictures of each instance. These pictures are then put together in a video which then gives the illusion of movement.

An animation following the events of a snake attempting to eat a bird. This is a short with comedy in mind as despite all of the snakes attempts, it consistently fails to catch it's prey.

Another animation akin to the bird from earlier on in this post. This time it covers the walking cycle of a spider. While this one isn't quite as intricate as the animation of the bird, I am still intrigued via the process.

Artists Research

Artists inspired by Birds/Insects/Reptiles

2D Artists

Name: Takeshi Obata
DOB: February 11, 1969
Famous Works: Death Note, Hikaru no Go, Blue Dragon Ral Grad
During the creation of a number of the Shinigami characters in the Death Note series. Takeshi Obata admitted to difficulties in coming up with designs which would also be simple enough to draw numerous times throughout the manga. He ultimately drew inspiration for some of these Shinigami characters from insects and reptiles.

Name: Dean Spencer
Website: http://www.deanspencerart.com/
Dean Spencer, a Fantasy/sci-fi illustrator. With the use of software which may include Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, Dean has produced a wide variety of art, mainly focusing on fantasy and sci-fi with a lot of his work having been clearly influenced by animals.

Name:  Yoshihiro Togashi
DOB: April 27th, 1966
Profession: Manga Artist
In his manga, HunterXHunter. Yoshihiro depicts many animals, both real and fictional. One of the more interesting creatures which he has created is the Chimera Ant. This is a carnivorous creature with an insatiable appetite. When the queen ant consumes other creatures, characteristics from those creatures get passed on to her children. This resulted in many unique characters consisting of various animal species mixed into one.

3D Artists

Name: Sayaka Kajita Ganz
Website: http://mokader.com/art/sayaka-recycled-sculptures/
Using discarded or recycled objects, Sayaka creates animal based sculptures. She is inspired to do this, as by building these sculptures, she feels she begins to better understand the human relationships that surround her.

Name: Justin Gershenson-Gates
Justin uses watch parts in order to create sculptures, among these include models based on reptiles and insects.

Name: Brenda Guyton
Brenda is an artist who has experimented with a variety of mediums. She is inspired by reptiles, mammals and artificial intelligence and how man and machine may combine in the future. Among her work I found these sculptures made from computer parts which are clearly influenced from reptiles and possibly how animals and technology could become one.

Name: Kim Hunter
Kim Hunter is an artists who primarily creates custom made crafts, such as dolls and sculptures. Among her work I found a wireframe sculpture which caught my interest.

Name: Mark Oliver
Website: http://cargocollective.com/TheLitterBug
Mark is an artist who creates bug sculptures out of (what he himself calls) crap. Essentially these sculptures are made from old toys and books. However what he makes from this supposed crap is nothing short of amazing.
